Brief Itinerary
Brief Itinerary
Oct. 7 & 8 - Yangon (2 nts, Sule Shangi-la Hotel, 1B, 1L, 1D/welcome dinner). On arrival day you’ll be transferred to the5* Sule Shangri-la Hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure. Next day be immersed in local culture takng a section fo the "circular train", visit a market and a tea shop and a few city sites like Bogyoke Market. Also visit the Shwedagon Pagoda, the most revered Buddist temple in the country.
Oct. 9, 10, 11 - Inle Lake (3 nts, Inle Princess Resort, 3B, 3L). Inle Lake is home to the Intha people who are fisherman and farmers. We will observe and experience their unique way of life as we visit their floating farms, villages and monasteries, and take in a local morning market. We take bicycles and ride along the shore experiencing local life at a relaxed pace.
Oc. 12 & 13 - Pindaya & Kalaw (2 nts, Kalaw Hill Lodge, 2B, 2L). Visit Pindaya Caves in the Shan Hills where 1,000s of Buddha images can be seen. Stay in Kalaw, a hill station on the rim of the Shan Plateau. Enjoy village walks in the hills and observe the lifestyle and learn about the strong traditions of the Palaung people.
Oct. 14, 15 & 16 - Bagan (3 nts, Tharabar Gate Hotel, 2B, 2L, 1D). Explore mystical Bagan, where centuries-old temples seem to cover the floodplain of the Irrawaddy River. We visit a selection of the 2,000+ temples. Other highlights include: being guests at a monastery, reaching some temples by traditional ox-cart, visiting quiet villages by bicycle, visiting a lacquerware workshop to see this unique artform, and enjoying a candel-lit dinner under the shadow of an ancient temple.
OPTION: Balloon Over Bagan! Prebook this exceptional experience for either Oct. 15 or 16. Premium service has fewer people per basket, at US$366 per person, including champagne & light breakfast. Refundable if weather does not permit the balloon flight.
Oct. 17 - River Cruise & Monywa (1 nt, Win Unity Hotel, 1B, 1L). Experience the languid Irrawaddy as we travel by boat upriver to Pakkoku (about 3 horus on the river). Visit one of the oldest teak monasteries in the country as we drive to Monywa, on the banks of the Chindwin river. This is definitely "off the beaten track" and we'll be in an area few others ever get to.
Oct. 18 & 19 - Monywa & Mandalay (2 nts, Rupar Mandalar Resort, 2B, 1L, 1D). Visit intriguing sites in the area: the Buddhist cave complex of Hpo Win Daung, Thanboddhay Pagoda and others, whose significance will strike you once you are there! In Mandalay, witness a "soon offering" as monks file out of their temples to receive donations in the early morning. See more sites in the area including the massive but unfinished Mingun pagoda and the largest working bell in the world!
Oct. 20, 21, 22 & 23 - Mandalay & Siem Reap (4 nts, Shinta Mani Resort, 4B, 2L, 2D). Visit a monastery to see the procession of 1,000 monks as they proceed to their daily meal, then fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Over the following 3 days we see the famous temples of Angkor (using environmentally-conscious "e-cars"), participate in a Khmer cooking class ending in lunch, and participate in a Shinta Mani Foundation activity as we christen a water well. We also witness a unique way of life visiting a floating village on Tonle Sap lake. End the trip with a celebratory farewell dinner.
